OFS James Taylor is a multidisciplinary studio based in Melbourne, working across three areas: Object. Furniture. Structure. 

The three are closely related. Ideas, materials and approaches move between them, allowing work at one scale to inform another. An object can raise questions of furniture; furniture can inform the way a structure is considered. Each provides a way of looking at the others.

The studio works towards clear, resolved outcomes through a combination of experimentation and practical judgement. Conventional approaches are questioned where necessary, while materials, resources and existing conditions are used with care. The result is design work that is considered, economical and precise.

Understanding is central to this approach. Each project begins with attention to the particular circumstances in which it will exist: the people involved, their habits, needs and values, as well as the physical and cultural conditions around them.

The studio draws on architecture, design and the humanities to develop this understanding. History, philosophy, anthropology, literature and art provide ways of examining how people relate to objects, places and one another. This helps to look beyond the immediate requirements of a brief and understand what gives a project its meaning and relevance.

The work is therefore grounded in its circumstances, while remaining open to unexpected possibilities. Experimental, rational, resourceful, refined.
